"Femininity is depicted as weakness,
the sapping of strength, yet masculinity is so fragile
that apparently even the slightest brush with the feminine destroys it."
-Gwen Sharp
No this is not a Slim Jim commercial on my blog, haha quite the opposite. My friend showed me this article called "Policing Masculinity in Slim Jim's 'Spice Loss' Ads." It is a super interesting article that critically analyzes Slim Jim's new commercial tactics and catch phrase. When I first watched the commercials I found them pretty funny, because they are. The scenes and the acting in the commercials can't really help but make you laugh. However, when you really look into the message behind the commercials, it isn't a good one. What exactly is it saying about being masculine and feminine? It both puts down femininity and drastically narrows the definition of what a "true" man should be. These main stream media outlets that are broadcasted to the general public have a huge say in defining what our society decides is feminine and masculine. It scares me a little to look around and realize how quickly and blatantly we segregate and define what it means to be male or female.
